Monument Valley is a childhood remembrance, a journey, a particular relationship with pop art, a Wim Wenders film and a literally literary attempt. In Monument Valley, JFrançois Chénin brings the pictorial space nearer to the pop art of big American spaces. The graphical intentions of the American paintings of the 1950′s and 70’s incorporate this natural space, which hesitates between the earth and the sky. From it also flows an…

Recession, contrary to common opinion, is a needed part of the economy cycle and more importantly for sustaining our civilization.Booms while great, do have downsides. No need for me to write on the upsides of a boom since they're well known and even fantasized! So to the upsides of a recession:1. Helps the 'humanity' aspect. During extended booms, its easy for individuals to became part of a rat race ie who has the biggest car, the exotic summer vacation etc etc. Recessions enable individuals to be grateful for what they took for granted. It helps reset the human clock on being content.2.

By Saad Hafiz The recent murder of Dr Mohammad Shakil Auj, the dean of Islamic Studies at the University of Karachi, is yet another atrocity in Pakistan’s seemingly unending sectarian conflict. Apparently, Dr Auj, known for his liberal religious views, was targeted for speaking out against sectarian killings. Since the 1980s, the country has been wracked by violence, mostly perpetrated by Sunni extremist groups against the Shia minority. It is important to mention that the Shias are not the only sect facing violence at the hands of extremists and terrorists in Pakistan. The Ahmedi…

Evidently different nationalist ideologies also shape the message in textbooks that India and Pakistan seek to convey to their future citizens. Historical events are politicised to substantiate present events with textbooks used as the tool to bolster a political agenda. Textbooks on either side have a…

One of the most important things that Musharraf did during his era was giving the media its much needed freedom. One of the reasons I believe this took so long was because, for most of our history, we have been under dictatorial rule and dictators generally do not like people pointing fingers at them or being held to account. The irony however, is that media was given freedom in Pakistan by a dictator. The fourth pillar of state There are three pillars of the state, namely: Government Legislature Judiciary In addition to this, the Media is often referred to as the fourth pillar of the state…
  • No, we are not being paid to attend the Dharnas Mr. Sharif!

    29 Sep 2014 | 6:11 am
A few days ago, one of the PML (N) MNA’s categorically said that people are being paid 400-500 PKR to attend the sit-ins organized by PTI and PAT. There was however, no proof for this. I don’t really know about the PAT rally, but it is evident that the people that are there to support PTI are not being paid. Politicians have used this trick for a long time now where they pay people to attend their self-serving rallies or disrupt law and order (remember Gullu Butt?). This is why they think that people will believe it when they say that PTI is paying people to attend the sit-ins and jalsas.

Everyone has by now heard of the Saeed Ajmal ban. Yes, even my first reaction was ‘Oh! Common! Is this all that the BCCI is doing?!’ They are scared of a challenge. But then I thought, maybe there is an actual issue. There are plenty of off-spinners called for their action; even Ajmal was a few years back. No doubt this is a big blow to the Pakistan cricket team because Saeed Ajmal is not just the best bowler in the team, but has consistently been one of the top bowlers in all three formats of the game for years now. However, in my opinion, it is also very possible that the new…

Mr. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is taking his political career to the next level. He can now be seen issuing official party statements (most of which we don’t need or care about), he can also be seen addressing small gatherings, and just last week he went around visiting the flood affected people to gather political points, just like his father did a few years back and his grandfather did quite a few years back. Well, this is not unusual for the children of our politicians who aspire to continue their family’s legacy; a statement here a comment there. In fact, I was wondering why Bilawal was…
