Today is T2F’s 6th birthday. It’s been an incredible journey replete with trauma and struggles but copious amounts of joy and fulfilment. PeaceNiche, a tiny not-for-profit venture, began in 2007 with Rs. 10 lacs sent by my mamoo for my nani’s medical fund. I took the money and ran but paid a heavy price over the next 2 years, as my nani was diagnosed with cancer and had to undergo a quadruple bypass. From 2007 to 2010, I maxed out 7 credit cards, took loans to pay off loans, didn’t earn a penny from PeaceNiche, worked nights on design/tech projects to pay my bills, and…

While the city had such green spaces as Lawrence Gardens, Aitchison College, the cantonment and Model Town, farm and forest on the outskirts began where Defence Society or Allama Iqbal Town and the innumerable societies now sprawl in south and east Lahore. Also, houses along main thoroughfares were constructed on plots of four or five thousand square yards or more, giving every residence a large garden with trees, shrubbery and flowers. I grew up in Lahore. All my life I lived here except for the seven years in the army and ten in Karachi. I returned again in December 1988 and have lived here since. I knew a Lahore that was a very beautiful city. It was a city of people who ere cultured, courteous and with a sense of humour that was sharp without being vulgar. This was a city of the most magnificent Mughal buildings and gardens. It was also a city where you could actually get into the countryside without going anywhere. The urban sprawl of what is now Johar town was a place of mango orchards and fields where one could hear…

A state of the art metro bus system – brand new and unique in Pakistan – should make every Lahori proud of their city today. A lot has been written and said about this system. And as is the case with almost everything in Pakistan, the points of views are poles apart. Many people regard this project as a major infrastructure breakthrough, while many call it excessive and useless. More often than not, both sides have politically affiliated, if not motivated, line of reasoning. I do not have a political affiliation. I have also not personally researched much on this project. by Saad Hafiz Pakistan’s historic path has been ridden by intrigue, strife and bloodshed overseen by power-hungry generals and money grubbing politicians. The chaos in the country also proves that a common religious identity is not a guarantee of stability, security, democracy and free elections. Past elections have not been able to foster a feeling of common destiny. Some elections were so widely and flagrantly rigged that civil rebellion broke out requiring the army to be called in, thus exposing the weakness of political leadership in the country. The army simply shoved the political…

Pakistan Elections 2013 have finally concluded. After years of complaints, protests, campaigning, Pakistan has elected a new party to rule over them for potentially five years. Before discussing the election results, it is incumbent to discuss the actual election process and media coverage. Raza Habib Raja I must admit one thing: I had never expected around two years ago that Imran Khan’s Facebook supporters will actually come out on the polling day and vote. In fact not only they came out but they actually instilled passion and enthusiasm in the entire election campaign. His appeal also influenced many of the youngsters from major urban cities who all came out during the campaign filling huge venues like Minar-e-Pakistan. Apart from that Imran’s influence…

By Nadeem Bajwa Although I respect and admire Khan for the cricketing hero he once was, for the philanthropist he still is and for the revolutionary leader he aspires to be, I fail to follow him blindly as many of my fellow countrymen do. But to some extent their actions are justifiable by our political culture and the depths that we have driven our country into. He might be patriotic, untainted by financial corruption and charismatic, but does that make him worthy of leading a nation or a country? The road to revolution is not paved with fundamental contradictions, U-turns and half-baked…

He reclaimed the mantle of post time favorite moments before the race began and then charged to the front late in the race to win the 137th Kentucky Derby. Orb had been set as the 9/2 ‘morning line’ favorite by Churchill Downs handicapper Mike Bataglia on Wednesday following the post position draw. Orb’s ascension to favorite status was also somewhat of a surprise after Verrazano had occupied that position on most Kentucky Derby…

  • 2013 Kentucky Derby Odds: Orb Could Be Post Time Favorite After All

    David Glisan
    4 May 2013 | 3:28 pm
Another change atop the tote board in the final minutes of betting before the start of the 137th Kentucky Derby. A late surge of betting on morning line favorite Orb has made him the ‘co favorite’ along with the Todd Pletcher trained Revolutionary. At this point both horses are priced at 6/1. There hasn’t been a clear cut favorite at any point during the Kentucky Derby betting cycle. That’s not the case in most years where the race will have one or two solid betting favorites. In fact, in many years the identity of the post time favorite is a foregone conclusion long before…
  • Kentucky Derby 2013: Derby Attendance Good, But Not A Record

    David Glisan
    4 May 2013 | 3:24 pm
The attendance for today’s Kentucky Derby card at Churchill Downs has been announced at an impressive 151,616. That’s far from a record, however, and just makes the top ten of the best attendance figures in Derby history. If the numbers are correct it will be the #9 crowd to attend the Kentucky Derby in history–an impressive turnout for a sport that can use some good news. Combined with reports of a slight uptick in betting for the 2013 Kentucky Derby it’ll go down in the books as a decent day that could have been much, much worse given the persistent threat of rain…

There hasn’t been a clear cut favorite at any point during the Kentucky Derby betting cycle. That’s not the case in most years where the race will have one or two solid betting favorites. In fact, in many years the identity of the post time favorite is a foregone conclusion long before post time. This year, however, there’s been several horses vying to be the race favorite and as post time draws closer it’s looking more and more like the favorite at the start of the race will be the Todd Pletcher trained Revolutionary.
