Last weekend was Halloween. I preferred to stay in on Friday and Saturday nights. Halloween was so overdone, what with skanky costumes and stupid face masks that I witnessed in America and I didn’t want to see the same in Karachi. But Sunday night, I went to an engagement. And I’m glad I did. You see, [...]

Climate rants
29 Oct 2009 | 10:47 pmAutumn is here to bring relief to ever ungrateful man from the scorching summer. Soon it will be winter and he’ll be complaining about the cold and longing for summer again. Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. I like to sit on the grass at FJ Park in the afternoon to enjoy the perfect weather. But this year is different, and, I’m afraid, things will never be the same. At the back of my head, is the nervousness about the recent terror that has been created in the capital. The day the music died…
8 Oct 2009 | 3:51 amOct 8 was one catastrophic day in the history of Pakistan. While the official death toll is about 80 k, people speculate about a hundred thousand casualties happened that day. Living in Islamabad, it seemed a big thing but not that big a thing. I still remember I came back from office early in the morning to sleep and then waking up at about 9 am ( I had a night duty that day ) due to the earthquake. Islamabad only suffered the collapse of the Margallah Towers. It wasn’t until sometime in the afternoon that it was partially revealed as of what a ruinous disaster has hit the country. I… -

Seatbelts now the law!!
4 Nov 2009 | 11:55 pmIf, like me, you wonder why people don’t wear seatbelts while driving in Lahore, it’s because there is come confusion as to whether or not wearing seatbelts is legally required. Well, the debate is finally over. According to this newspaper report, the Punjab Assembly just introduced an amendment in the Motor Vehicle Ordinance, 1965 making it mandatory for automobile drivers to wear seatbelts. Finally and thank god!!! But not so soon, some of the fine print says that the seatbelt requirement will not apply if, for instance, the car doesn’t have any in the first place. The new… -
Are we witnessing end of Pakistan?
28 Oct 2009 | 6:46 pmWithout a doubt Pakistan is witnessing her worst crisis since the Bangladesh debacle. Most major cities are witnessing deadly attacks on a consistent basis and just today close to 100 innocent people lost their lives in Peshawar. Where is our beloved country heading? Is the operation in Wazirstan going to solve our problems? I highly doubt. Who is our enemy? Is it the Taliban, India, the US, or we don’t need an enemy as WE are our own worst enemy. Something has to give up here. For how long this bloodshed could go on? Just for how long? Have we not had enough? This month alone we have lost… -

That is also why this particular pictures intrigued us much more than just because of what is written at the back of the rickshaw. For some reason, it looked very… -
Afaq’s Struggles for Justice
4 Nov 2009 | 9:05 pmHassan Rehman He seems like any other ordinary mortal. Talk to him and you will know that he has not been fortunate enough to attend some prestigious school or college. His clothing reveals that he belongs to a middle class family. His ‘khatara’ byke confirms his middle class back ground. If he is not wearing black coat and pant, no one will believe that he is a lawyer. So what made TIME magazine print his photograph back in November 2007? His courage and his defiance. Back on 5th November, 2007, when the Lahore High Court was stormed by the police, where hundreds of lawyers and dozens of… -
Aisam-Cerritani Beat Federer-Chidudinelli
3 Nov 2009 | 9:12 pmAdil Najam Aisamul Haq Qureshi - Pakistan’s most prominent tennis star about whom we have written at ATP here and here - and his doubles partner James Cerritani scored a high profile upset by beating World Number One Roger Federer and his partner Marco Chiudinelliini straight sets at the Basel Open today. That this happened in Federer’s hometown makes this even more poignant for Aisam and partner. Having rooted for Aisamul Haq Qureshi before (here and here), let us take this oportunity to root for him again. Well done, Aisam. Here are details, from Dawn: Pakistan’s tennis ace… -
The Hillary Show
3 Nov 2009 | 5:43 pmDeeda-e-Beena The extremely well choreographed show is over and the performer is returning in the comfort of her dressing room in the air, with satisfaction writ all over. Indeed it was a command performance amply facilitated by the traditional Pakistani fervour and hospitality. Hillary is a talent of all seasons and all occasions. Her just concluded act in Pakistan was a side of her rarely seen. She has carved her place in the performance domain leaving Sarah Palin far behind. Her eyes are clearly on a much cherished ball, unlike the Alaskan Hockey Mom who has succumbed to making hay and…

The Apple Tablet is one Apple product I *will* buy… if it’s real, of course.
7 Oct 2009 | 4:41 pmGenerally speaking, I don’t like Apple. I’ve made that pretty clear. That said, there is one Apple product I am interested in. And yes, if they come out with it soon enough, I’ll buy it. If you haven’t guessed already, that product is the yet-unnamed Apple Tablet. True, the Apple Tablet has been a famed beast of [...] -

As muslim countries progress, why do so many in the west react with anger and jealousy?
23 Sep 2009 | 7:08 amTechCrunch just published a piece about the inauguration of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology(KAUST). New Iran – New Intentions
4 Nov 2009 | 10:29 amGuest blog by Ishaal Zehra The attack which killed the National Deputy Commander of the ground forces of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (RG), General Noor Ali Shooshtari and the provincial commander for Sistan-Baluchistan, Rajab Ali Mohammadzadeh along with some senior officers and 42 others in a homicide bombing inflicted Iran’s worst military casualties in years. Quick after the mishap, an Iranian military official went as far as to raise the prospect of a possible military offensive into Pakistan against the group blamed for the attack. “There is even unanimity that these… -
Open Letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
2 Nov 2009 | 12:43 amYour Excellency, Allow me to apologize to you for not being able to be present during your address to civil society at the hallowed campus of Government College University in my beloved city of Lahore. Much as I would have wanted to benefit from the wisdom of your analysis and foresight, I could not make the journey quickly enough from the remote town of Chilas where I was in consultation with the proponents of a major dam which shall displace 32,000 people and submerge 32,000 ancient rock carvings if and when built. Allow me to further explain that since flights were cancelled from the… -
Different Flavors of Public Protest in India and Pakistan
29 Oct 2009 | 9:27 amIndians and Pakistanis are discussing the leadership crisis in their respective countries, but for different reasons and with different implications. India’s inability to wield influence on the world stage is being blamed on the lack of good leadership. In Pakistan, people feel that the political leaders have failed to instill confidence and provide direction when the country is consumed by the threat of terrorism. Are these leadership demands signs of widening and maturing democracy in the two countries? Or are the Indians and Pakistanis wanting to re-live the hope and optimism… -

Waziristan Strategy or Pakistan Strategy?
28 Oct 2009 | 12:44 pmBy Azhar Aslam Waziristan today has come to symbolize the paradigm in which Pakistan finds itself. An epicentre of ‘terrorism’, a symbol of ‘Talibanization’ and now a field for what has been euphemistically called ‘mother of all battles’. Pakistan and Waziristan were not always like this. How we have come to this pass is crucial to analyse, but even more urgent is to assess that are we prepared enough to win this battle? Is this just a battle or a war? Is the battle confined to South Waziristan? What are the implications beyond Waziristan? What lies beyond the battle? What will…

The broadband regime in Pakistan
30 Oct 2009 | 10:30 pmPakistan had its first broadband policy documented in 2001. According to that, the following implied the definition of broadband in the country: Broadband in Pakistan will be defined as “Always on Internet connection with a download speed of at least 128kbps connectivity”. This download speed target will be subject to an increase as the bandwidth prices reduce, local content becomes available and there is a general increase in awareness of broadband. The main objectives of the established Broadband policy were: 1. Spreading of an affordable, ‘always on,’ broadband high speed internet… -

The Definitive Entrepreneur’s Guide to Lawyers
22 Sep 2009 | 10:14 amOver the last few years I have seen a tremendous rise in interest in entrepreneurship. Surprisingly, a large number of early stage entrepreneurs keep making expensive mistakes which are completely avoidable. One of the reason for such mistakes is the lack of access to seasoned entrepreneurs who can be a source of learning. I previously wrote about the startup guide written by Naeem Zafar. That guide laid out the necessary steps one needs before starting a new venture (you can get a free copy of the book by signing up at Startup-Advisor.com). As a followup to that, Naeem has recently published… -

Away from the lunatic fringe
7 Nov 2009 | 4:46 amIs there a connection between the absence of madressahs and guns and that of violence in the public sphere? The election campaign’s images coming out of Gilgit-Baltistan are just old world enthralling. The region is set to go to the polls on Nov 12, and big and small leaders of political parties like the PPP, the PML-N and –Q, the MQM and others have been holding mammoth election rallies throughout the region. Conspicuous by its absence from the scene is the self-righteous religious brigade comprising the erstwhile MMA, the short-lived conglomerate of six religious parties, which was the… -

Reports this week state that the president is ready to hand over some of the authority given under Article 58-2b to the parliament – sounds familiar? Perhaps it reminds you of the time Zardari first stated this well over a year ago. In May 2008, President Zardari was harping… -
No help against harassment
5 Nov 2009 | 3:43 amI couldn’t help but laugh at the first story I read in the newspaper this morning at my breakfast table. The headline, which read ‘Higher penalty for women’s harassment approved,’ indicated that the government had increased the fine and years of imprisonment for all those lecherous men out there. And, in fact, according to the Criminal Law (Amendment Bill), the punishment for sexual harassment has been increased to three years’ imprisonment (up from one year) and an ‘unspecified fine’ for a ‘vague insult’ to a woman. As I read on, I realised that the… -
A hat-trick for Pakistan sports
4 Nov 2009 | 2:03 amWhat could possibly make a Pakistani fan turn away from a clinical performance by their cricket team, while it’s in progress? The score line of a James Cerritani and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi vs. Marco Chiudinelli and Roger Federer doubles game! For a moment it almost seemed surreal: Federer in his ‘formal attire,’ a brown Nike jersey with white trim on the collar, wiping the hair off his forehead, with his left hand before bouncing the ball in his trademark style and then serving with body in perfect unison. And the receiver of the serve? For a minute it seemed as if the satellite signal… -
Out of sight, out of mind
4 Nov 2009 | 1:01 amIt’s worth remembering the adage ‘justice delayed is justice denied.’ Yesterday marked the second anniversary of the missing people’s case. Amina Masood Janjua, chairperson of the Defence of Human Rights in Pakistan – an independent organisation calling for the release of all citizens who have been illegally detained – continues her four-year-long struggle to locate her missing husband as well as the other missing people of Pakistan. Most of them were dragged out of their houses, abducted from offices, picked off roads, and hustled into waiting vans, never to be heard from again.

Waziristan: name the names - By Farhat Taj
7 Nov 2009 | 1:32 amWaziristan: name the namesSaturday, November 07, 2009Farhat TajThe points that Ayaz Wazir (Oct 30) raised in response to my article (Oct 26) endorsed some of the arguments that I have been making in these pages -- i.e., the previous military operations in Waziristan were not targeted and the leadership of the Taliban terrorists was tacitly given safe passages to escape. Chanting "Fair is foul and foul is fair," the witches… -

PPP and Pakistan Army: The only union that can save Pakistan from the Taliban
7 Nov 2009 | 12:59 amNazir Naji's advice to the Pakistani nation as well as to the opportunist leaders of PML(N). Forget mid-term elections. Everyone must be united to support the current democratic set up. Those politicians and their supporters in media who are sympathetic to Taliban and Al Qaeda will lead Pakistan to destruction. Pakistan Army cannot and must not rely on the pro-Taliban politicians and journalists.
