As you all may have heard about 3 days back Pakistan was abuzz with the abduction of a 14 yr old girl Madinah Anwar, well as the story played out it turns out that it might have been a con job by the father.  Details can be read in the Express Tribune Article “Conman Shamsul Anwar Busted“. The story of his daughter’s abduction was not newly minted, as Anwar has been portraying himself as a victim of terrorism since 2010. However, when his daughter Madina Anwar eloped to Swabi to marry her ex-fiancé, Anwar decided to take advantage of the situation. But for this purpose, he…

OLX is a global online retailer and auction site. They have an impressive footprint in a little less than 100 countries, each with their own specific domain (like .pk for Pakistan and .in for India). In Pakistan they have been operating under olx.com.pk for some time with people using it to sell things online. Recently they have started advertising heavily on Television, a medium seldom used by online businesses previously. The ads (two of which have appeared ) are witty and fun to watch. The most important factor of these adds is that they are being advertised on media which previously none…

However its also difficult to introduce this into an already budding field of new media in Pakistan. Last years (or two years back now since its 2012)  Awards were initiated so as it is expected it faced initial growing up pains. It always takes time for such thing to wins the trust of the community. By Usmann Rana One of the rallying points in favor of the rise of Pakistani politician Imran Khan, apart from the utter disillusionment of the masses and corruption of both the major and leading parties, has been his charismatic personality. But Khan’s recent interview to NDTV’s Barkha Dutt, seemed to have lost that element and for once laid bare the stark contradictions between his own statements showing his inanity. For example, Khan believes, to quote him, ‘the age of martial law is over… Whatever happens I don’t see military takeover.’ Yes, Mr Khan it is. But the…

Nevertheless, as I turn up to gaze at the heavens in moments of obscurity, she is there to placate me and to grant me hope and direction. The instant, I see myself ripped by obstructions, she is there to give me valor and vigor. The empathy twinges into trillions and splits my soul as I heed of her brutal assassination even after years, be it a very small mention of the sacrifice that she gave for democracy and humanity. My eyes have not turned blind after watching it and…

By Ali Aftab Saeed: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority blocks access to porn sites in Pakistan. The central theme of this piece is not porn per se, but the pros and cons of the decision to ban it. In principle of course, if we decide as a nation that we shouldn’t have porn only a click away, then we should have the right to ban it. What is unacceptable is for some agency to control the flow and content of information. Because when authorities decide the content people should have access to, it is usually not for the sake of providing quality information. The concern shown by people…

    28 Jan 2012 | 2:57 am
Sorry it is been weeks since I have written a post (or may be that’s a good thing). It is my birthday. I am 24 now. Each year my birthday realizes me many things. I look into past and future. Prepare myself to be a better person, tried to do the same last year. I failed. I succeeded sometimes too. It is great. It is all great where I find myself now. I am not really sure how to say, but let’s keep it simple: Thank you for being with. I am thankful I am still alive. And universe is giving me an opportunity to work on wonderful projects like leading Hometown Shoes. I have learned:…

Like me, if you live on Internet and Pakistan, strong are the chances you’re already familiar with the Authority of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). We know PTA from their active involvement in our SMS, Watching us online, and yes banning Facebook and other websites in general. Most recently over 1,000 porn sites were blocked by internet service providers (ISP), directed by PTA. It was also stated by a source, “They are adding to the list on a daily basis.” Here is where I and PTA get face-to-face, my problem is not like they have blocked my favorite porn site.

2011 is to over. Exactly a year back when I was finishing 2010, I had many goals, and challenges set for me. One of them was ‘writing daily‘ which I couldn’t fulfill. I have published 117 posts on this blog, including this one. To tell you the inside story, I couldn’t do most of what I planned. I had a to-do list for 2011, which is ending with less accomplishments but thankfully more learning than ever. My purpose was to do few things regularly which would make me a better person for 2011. Gladly, I’m a better person today than what I was a year back. This time,…

  • Fauji Bin Qasim: Record earnings in 2011; margins erosion ahead

    Mahmood Elahi
    26 Jan 2012 | 11:53 pm
Fauji Bin Qasim (FFBL) reported record profits; sedate period ahead Fauji Bin Qasim (FFBL) announced record EPS of PRs11.53 for 2011, +67% YoY on the back of peak DAP margins. The excitement surrounding the results has seen Fauji Bin Qasim‘s stock price recover 19% from its low of PRs42.05 in early Jan. Going forward, we foresee a comparatively sedate period where we reiterate our view of a potential decline in int’l DAP prices and margins, leading to 46% YoY drop in 2012E EPS. After incorporating the higher than expected gas price increase on Jan 1st, our PO now stands at…

  • PPL: Robust 1H; stronger 2H ahead

    Mahmood Elahi
    26 Jan 2012 | 12:02 am
Pakistan Petroleum (PPL) posted a strong set of numbers with 1H FY12 EPS of PRs15.3/sh and DPS of PRs5, the results carried a nominal negative surprise. 21% bottom line growth is mainly driven by higher sales and other income. We maintain our full year estimates (1H EPS constitutes 46% of our FY12 estimate). Backed by higher oil & gas prices and 43% growth in oil production, sales grew by 21% YoY in 1H. QoQ sales are flat, a key surprise considering volume growth of 2%. We are not overly concerned on 22% higher opex YoY. We flag higher 2H earnings on combination of (1) production addition…
